I covered first UK Tough Mudder event of the season, down in Northampton. Crazy scenes ! If you are not sure, Tough Mudder is an endurance event series in which participants attempt 10–12 mile long military-style obstacle courses. Designed by British Special Forces to test mental as well as physical strength, obstacles often play off of common human fears, such as fire, water, and heights. The organizers encourage teamwork, and many obstacles are purposefully designed so as to be very difficult to complete alone. The events are untimed, but on average only 78% of entrants successfully complete the course.
I was located at the first obstacle, at the one mile marker, called Arctic Enema. Participants plunge into a large skip like tank filled with ice water, dunk underneath a plank that crosses the tank, and pull themselves out on other side. The expressions on people's faces and the language was amazing. Some industrial swearing going on ! Of course I had a little time to visit other parts of the course, so below are some highlights. Tough Mudder has a whole series of events across the UK this year, so looking forward to some more muddy times in various fields !
